CDMA, ya heard?

hardwareDue to the extended conversation in the shoutbox, I though I'd give you guys some basic info on wireless phones and the technology they use. For the purposes of this discussion, I will cover national carriers only. If someone wants information on a regional or international carrier, I'll provide you with whatever I have.

We'll start with a technology near and dear to my heart. It's called CDMA which is an acronym for Code Division Multiple Access. It is a method of stacking calls on a cell tower wherein each call is assigned a specific and unique code. In so doing, the tower can handle somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 calls per megahertz. It was developed exclusively by Qualcomm in a lovely building that is next door to my office.

Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS, ranked second and third respectively in terms of market share, are the two national carriers that employ CDMA currently. Most of their networks are CDMAOne, or 2G services with slower QNC data speeds. Verizon has rolled out a 2.5G network with EV-DO (Evolution, Data Only), sometimes referred to as 1X, that boasts theoretical data speeds of 300 to 500kbps.

In terms of coverage, Verizon's network is currently the largest in the United States. Their plans, however, are somewhat more expensive than other carriers. This is due to the money they spend on their network making it one of the best in the nation. Sprint, on the other hand, ain't too shabby either. Their network is good, but not as good as Verizon. In many areas where Verizon has a strong foothold, such as the northeast and here in Southern California, Sprint's network is a tad shoddy because they have no incentive to upgrade.

And now, we move to a second post for GSM.

So, in your personal opinion, you would pick Verizon over Cingular, because it has a larger and more updated service area?
Robert L. Feb 09, 2005 09:01
I am deciding on eithe Cingular, Verizon, and TMobile.
Robert L. Feb 09, 2005 11:00
I think I would want Verizon, just for the ability to use my phone where I work... a co worker said verizon was the only carrier he could use in the hospital.
Robert L. Feb 09, 2005 11:01
I guess that goes to that thing Mackieman said about CDMA penetrates walls better than GSM signals.
Corey T. Feb 09, 2005 12:32
I would pick Verizon over Cingular just because Cingular is GSM and I don't like GSM. Where I live, Verizon is really the only game in town and they're the only carrier that sells Kyocera phones, so it made sense for me. I had Sprint when I lived in Texas and was quite pleased.

The deal is that Verizon has the capital lying around to upgrade their network. Almost 20 cities have 1X service now and that number continues to grow. 1X handsets are just now starting to hit the market and they're quite expensive for feature rich models. For example, the Kyocera KX2 which came out last month with Verizon retails for $150 after rebates with two year contract.

A lot of it really depends on where you live, where you plan on using your phone, and what features you're looking for.
Robert L. Feb 09, 2005 12:43
I have always be fawnd of Motorola & the nicer LG phones.
Robert L. Feb 09, 2005 12:43
Kyroceras are bulky though, that is the only thing I hate about them.
Corey T. Feb 09, 2005 14:51
That's only because we put bleedin' huge beautiful screens on them. If you're wanting a smaller phone with less features, Verizon is going to start selling the KX1 or SoHo shortly, check it out at Kyocera-Wireless.Com.
Robert L. Feb 09, 2005 15:20
That is probably the most pimp kyrocera i have seen. The SOHO I mean... the KX1 isn't too shabby either.
Corey T. Feb 09, 2005 18:56
KX1 is SoHo. KX2 is sometimes marketed as Koi, but Verizon is selling it as KX2. Every phone we make has three or four names that make no sense, heh. It's confusing.
Robert L. Feb 09, 2005 22:42
Do you work for Kyrocera?
Bill S. Feb 09, 2005 23:16
...and the train pulls into the station.
Corey T. Feb 09, 2005 23:39
You cannot seriously be that dense...

Yes, I work for Kyocera. Please note that it is Kyocera, and not Kyrocera. It is pronounced, "Key-oh-sarah."
Paul A. Feb 09, 2005 23:45
Kyocera phones kick ass
Corey T. Feb 10, 2005 00:17
This man speaks the unpunctuated truth!
Tommy G. Feb 10, 2005 12:10
ROFL! Good to see you guys are picking up on the whole "comments" usage. Thanks for posting Mackie.

and for working for Kyocera! - GASP!
Robert L. Feb 10, 2005 16:04
I had been posting in the shotbox, because its faster when I am busy while working.... sorry.
Robert L. Feb 10, 2005 16:06
How would I know Mackie, I know alot about BMWs, but do I work for them, no. Excuse the typo... i asked a simple question.
Tommy G. Feb 10, 2005 17:08
haha - don't take offense. Just rippin' on ya.

Ez awl good knee grow!
Bill S. Feb 10, 2005 18:38
It's just the constant use of "we" and "our", in place of "they" and "their", when talking about Kyocera that gave it away for me.
Robert L. Feb 10, 2005 22:26
sarcasm, sarcasm... quit flirting dude.
Robert L. Feb 13, 2005 13:21
I should get my new Motorola phone tomorrow. I got it with a national verizon plan. I bought this phone for a few reasons... one it is one of the smaller flip phones, and it is more attractive than any other verizon phone except the v710 motorola. Very suave looking phone... form follows function in the simple design. Not the biggest screen, but i don't play phone games... I'll get a PSP for that.
Robert L. Feb 13, 2005 13:22
Oh, and just to mention.... motorola phones have the most pimp installable hands free car kits on the market.
